Mechanics
Engineering Mechanics, the basis of all the mechanical sciences, is the study of forces that act on bodies and the resultant motion that those bodies experience. Our Engineering Mechanics Group provides expertise in the analysis of solid mechanics, kinematics, static and dynamics of mechanical systems, mechanisms, and components. This expertise is applied by our highly trained engineers and technical staff members in the investigation and reconstruction of automotive and industrial accidents, as well as in the engineering analysis, design evaluations, and testing of mechanical systems.
Materials Engineering
Mechanics
Applying the scientific principles of materials and mechanics is necessary to thoroughly analyze a failure. Our engineers use mechanical analyses to tell what forces or motions caused the failure, from simple events such as too much stress to complex phenomena such as impact, shock, thermal gradients, material interaction, and accelerations. Packer engineers and scientists possess the expertise to determine not only the mode of failure but also the mechanism. Services include:
- Adhesion and coating evaluation
- Dynamic testing and analysis
- Fracture and failure analysis
- Mechanical testing
- Computer modeling and stress analysis
- Tribological testing
- Component testing
Materials Characteristics
Understanding the characteristics of materials is vitally important to being able to make materials more reliable and useful to society. Our engineers’ knowledge of a material’s physical, chemical, and mechanical properties allows them to determine if the material will meet specified challenges. Clients from the telecommunications, steel and foundry, transportation, manufacturing, and utilities industries often rely on us to provide expert testing and analysis of materials. We perform materials analysis for the following:
- Building materials
- Casting and molding
- Ceramics and glass
- Composites
- Electronic materials
- Fire dynamics
- Fire and explosion investigation
- Flammability of materials
- Material compatibility and selection
- Metallurgy
- Polymers and plastics
- Remaining life assessment
- Vehicle components
